Elizabeth R Bacon is Counsel at Brooks, Tarulis and Tibble, LLC
Here is what Elizabeth says about her 25 years of experience as a business and dispute resolution attorney and what she has learned on her journey.
Q: You have a BA in History and Women’s Studies from The College of Wooster, tell us how your background has led you to your current position.
A: As an undergraduate at Wooster, I designed a major focused on contemporary women’s legal issues and completed two theses on the legal dynamics of intimate partner abuse. That experience confirmed my decision to practice law and I remain passionate and active in the pursuit of legal fairness for women in all arenas. I took a fifteen year detour to work for Fortune 500 companies, but I am pleased to be have finally achieved one of my original goals, namely to represent many women entrepreneurs and their companies throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.
Q: What gets you excited about your work?
A: Working with clients to achieve their business goals, address pressing issues or resolve disputes affecting their personal or commercial productivity really keeps me engaged. My privacy practice brings interesting questions to my attention on a regular basis and being on the cutting edge as privacy law is literally being made every day is also very energizing.
Q: What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned along the way?
A: That there is not one right way to practice law—it’s both an art and a science. A good lawyer is one who sees the end game and does what it takes to get there with skill, finesse and persistence.
Q: How has the legal profession changed in the last twenty-five years?
A: It’s hard to say. In many ways, I don’t think it has changed enough. Clients with huge legal budgets still garner the most attention from law firms, women are still fighting an uphill battle in against sexism and ageism, and fee agreements are still predominantly structured around time spent and not results achieved. All that being said, I do think that clients are far more savvy in managing their relationships with legal counsel and that is definitely a good development.
Q: What advice would you give for other women in business?
A: Identify and be guided by your own approach to whatever you do professionally. Notice what is effective for others and then adapt and adopt whatever version of that works with your personal style.
Q: What is your involvement in volunteer and community agencies/organizations?
A: I represent inmates at Stateville prison in medical care and innocence project lawsuits and coach a high school mock trial team. I am also president of the Legal Alumni of the College of Wooster and active in the NACC with Women in Business and Team Connect.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I love to cook of all kinds of cuisines, grow vegetables and flowers in my garden and spend time outdoors with my enormous Great Pyrenees, Apollo, and college sweetheart, now fiancé, Brian. Other than that, my free time is usually spent on the phone with one or the other of my two daughters—one just returned from three years in Africa with the Peace Corps and the other about to graduate from the College of Wooster and head off to medical school.
