Peggy McGuire – Director of Child and Family Development – Project HELP

When I feel comfortable and complacent, this is when I fear my growth as a person and a professional stall. So, my message is this: we all have so much to give to the world and each other. Our talents, energy and love are boundless. Let’s exhaust them! Stay challenged!

When I took on the role of Executive Director with Project HELP in March 2014, the organization was serving fewer than 12 families in a year with Parent Mentoring and workshops. Last year, with our team and incredible Board of Directors, we were able to serve over 400 families. All of our clients are families  at risk families and 97% were low income.

Our fiscal year begins in September and in our barely begun year, we have already served over 300 parents with workshops and mentoring!

Stay challenged! As of September 2017, Project HELP had the honor of becoming a program within the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago. Project HELP will be able to provide the same parenting support and education, but now we can leverage our service, talent and resources with this exceptional social service enterprise.

I cannot stop planning, dreaming and strategizing of all things that will be possible for our families and the community because of this partnership.!

The challenges come every day in my new role, and for that I am incredibly grateful. I know I am learning, stretching and making the most of my life.  The real struggle is to be patient with myself as I am learning. I told my 23-year-old son this weekend, as he begins a new job and he was being hard on himself for not knowing everything, “If you aren’t failing occasionally, you aren’t doing what they hired you to do. Challenge yourself, try new ideas and practices, learn from success and failure and be patient with yourself.”

As professionals, we all know this. I am not sharing earth shattering new tips. The truth, however, is searching out, taking on challenges that seem out of reach, is what makes us all excellent and unique.

Through my experience with the Women in Business network, I have been inspired by the overwhelming excellent and unique women involved!!  Thank you!
